Debaters earn state honors

Facing 4A competition at the state level for the first time, the Silver Lake debate squad brought home hardware and and impressive records from the 2-speaker tournament this weekend.
According to Gail Naylor, debate coach, juniors Jake Maryott and Riley Oblander placed second in the 2-speaker 4A classification state debate tournament at Goddard High School.
Maryott and Oblander lost to Buhler on a split decision in the final round with a record of 6-3.
Senior Lindsey Schroeder and junior Nikki Richardson were quarterfinal medalists, taking fourth place with a record of 7-1.
Seniors Shelby Brokaw and Jerod Barker medaled in ninth place with a record of 5-2, and junior Chloe Austin and sophomore Kyle Klucas received 13th place and a medal with a record of 4-3.
Naylor said Silver Lake entered the maximum number of teams eligible in the tournament. She said 67 teams competed, and Silver Lake High School and Buhler High School were the only schools to advance all entries into elimination rounds and earn medals for every entrant.
She said the total win-loss for Silver Lake was 22-9.
