Reading Round-Up scheduled for Friday night

By Rachel Stover

March 08, 2005

The first ever Reading Round-Up is coming to Silver Lake Grade School for cowboys and cowgirls in first, second, and third grade this Friday, March 11.

The event will be from 6 - 8 p.m. at the grade school for those students who sent in their reservations. Students must be accompanied by an adult, and siblings must stay home.

According to JoAnn Wolf, elementary librarian, the schedule is as follows: third graders must arrive at 6 p.m. to register, "set up camp" and get dinner. Second graders should arrive at 6:10 p.m. for registration, camp set up and dinner, and first graders should arrive at 6:20 p.m. for the same scheduled events.

She said at 6:30 p.m., the cowboys and cowgirls will participate in a large group activity in the gym. A quiet time will follow at 6:45 p.m. Wolf said quiet time involves students reading with their parent or guardian for the evening. At 7:15 p.m., she said everyone will regroup for some reading games and prizes. The event concludes at 7:45 p.m.

Wolf said for a truly "comfy campsite," she suggests bringing the student’s favorite books, pillows, bunkroll, and camp chairs. She said the round-up is for the students to spend an evening with their parents reading. The money from the library’s Scholastic Book Fair and money from the Silver Lake NEA made it possible to purchase the books for the students and for the Chuck Wagon dinner.

She said the students are really in for an exciting evening of reading with their parents on the “ranch.”
