3A or 4A? That is the question.

Silver Lake High School’s current
enrollment as of Monday, Sept. 21 has increased in the number of
students and there is a concern that the current ranking of 3A
might be moved to 4A. Kansas State High School Activities
Association (KSHSAA) will have the list of how the schools shall be
grouped Monday, Sept. 28 on their web site www.kshsaa.org and in
local newspapers.
The sizing is based every year on the
number of students in the 10-12th grades with the exception of
football. Football is looked at every two years and is based on the
number of students in 9-11th grades.
The rankings are used to group schools with
similar population size. By doing that they have a more equal
chance when competing in regional and state events.
“As far as athletics and activities we
would be put in a class where we would be one of the smallest
schools verses right now where were one of the largest in our
group. We might have to play schools twice our size in post season
play,” stated superintendent, Randy Freeman.
Athletic director, Brad Womack explains how
some coaches are worried about not being prepared to play bigger
schools but he feels we will do fine.
“One way it will effect us this year is
that some of the coaches have expressed a concern that our schedule
might not adequately prepare us for 4A competition when it comes to
regionals and state, but in the majority of our sports we already
play a lot of 4A sports so it probably wont effect us too much,”
explained Womack.
