College is just around the corner for some members of the Class of 2007, and it's time to start applying for local scholarships.
Wayne Kellner, President of the Silver Lake Scholarship Foundation, announced that the Foundation will award nine scholarships for a total of $12,500 to the Class of 2007. The deadline to turn applications into Mr. Kramer is April 20. The scholarships offered this year are as follows:
1. Two "Donald A. Dain Memorial Scholarships" of $2,500.
2. One "Laura F. Dain Memorial Scholarship" of $1,500.
3. Four scholarships of $1,000.
4. Two scholarships of $500 from the Foundation.
Interested applicants should contact Ron Kramer, counselor, regarding qualifications and official application forms.
The Silver Lake Scholarship Foundation's endowment fund now exceeds $185,000 in assets. Counting the scholarships for 2007, the Foundation will have been instrumental in providing 53 scholarships for $67,000 to Silver Lake High School graduates. This money has been raised from benefit functions and donations since the Foundation was organized on April 4, 1996.
The Foundation established an endowment fund, with only the earnings used to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from SLHS. It is anticipated that scholarships of this amount or larger will be granted every year from now on.
The family of Mabel Brown and the Silver Lake Alumni has proposed rewarding a $500 scholarship per semester for two semesters to a graduating senior. Graduates can get an application form from Kramer.
The requirements for the scholarship are as followed: applicants must have an unconditional diploma, must demonstrate financial need, must have a well maintained grade point average, must truthfully respond to the questions on the form, and must be a Kansas resident and attend a college or non-traditional college within the state.
The application forms must be turned into Kramer by April 16.
H&R Block will provide a $200 scholarship to a graduating SLHS senior. The recipient will be able to use the scholarship for whatever they see fit.
The only qualifications are that the student must be a graduating senior, and you must mail a completed application by May 1.
H&R Block will determine the recipient of the award and the decision is final. Questions should be directed to Johnny Johnston, H&R Block, 406 Circle Dr., PO Box 355, Silver Lake, Kan. 66539. Seniors may contact him also by telephone at 785-582-9504. Please submit the applications to H&R Block, PO Box 355, Silver Lake, Kansas 66539. Applications must be postmarked by May 1.
The Silver Lake NEA will reward two scholarships of $250 each to a SLHS senior.
The requirements for the scholarship are that the student must have plans to attend a college or vocational school in the summer or fall semester of 2007. The applicants will be examined on three levels. First, their cumulative grade point average will count as a third, their high school teachers' ratings will count as another third, and finally, their interview with a committee of teachers will count as a third.
Seniors can get an application from Kramer and they must be returned to him by April 23. The interviews with the teacher committee will be on April 30 and May 3.
